School Business Official of the Year Awards

School business officials in Ohio are responsible annually for billions of public dollars. Their successful management of those dollars, their personal successes and accomplishments, as well as their selfless service to their school system, their profession and their community is often a well-kept secret. At the January 1985 board meeting of the Foundation for School Business Management trustees, an awards program was established to recognize these individuals on an annual basis. There are currently four categories of this prestigious award:

  • Outstanding Food Service Director of the Year Award
  • Outstanding Transportation Director of the Year Award
  • Outstanding Business Operations Manager of the Year Award
  • Outstanding Treasurer/CFO of the Year Award

Eligibility

  • Any Ohio school business official is eligible to be nominated for this award.
  • Members of the OASBO Board of Directors and the Foundation Board of Trustees are not eligible for awards.

Selection Process/Criteria
Nominations for the award will be submitted using the Outstanding School Business Official of the Year Award application form. The Foundation Board of Trustees will serve as the selection committee. The selection criteria will be based on the following:

  • Achievements in service to the profession, community and school system.

If a certificate or license is required to hold the SBO position, please indicate that on the nomination form. However, the Outstanding Business Operations Manager of the Year Award does not require the individual to be a licensed Business Manager to be considered for the award, but applicants must be the administrator responsible for business/operations management in their district. Treasurer/CFO's who have also been assigned business operations management responsibilities in their districts are not eligible for the Business Operations Manager award.

A minimum number of service years is not required to qualify for the award, but a nominee should have sufficient experience to allow the selection committee to adequately evaluate the nominee's achievements.

Awards and Scholarship Recipients
The Foundation will make a contribution of $500 to an eligible organization in the name of the award recipient to fund a scholarship for a graduating senior from a high school in the district that employs the award recipient.

The eligible organization or a selection committee determined by the eligible organization shall select the scholarship recipient. The eligible organization shall take into account criteria (such as financial need, academic performance, or performance in a particular area) proposed by the award recipient.

The term “eligible organization” refers to a school district or charitable organization meeting criteria established by the Foundation and reflected in the “Organizations Eligible to Receive Foundation Grants for Scholarships” document attached hereto. An award winner may be asked to assist in identifying an eligible organization to receive the contribution and make the scholarship awards.

Recognition
Each year, award winners will be honored at the OASBO Annual Conference & Expo and Ohio School Boards Association Capital Conference.
