School business officials in Ohio are responsible for managing billions of public dollars each year. The Outstanding School Business Officials of the Year recognize OASBO members for the successful management of public funds, personal accomplishments, and selfless service to school communities.

Josh created a new revenue stream by providing maintenance services, bus rentals, and driver training to other districts. This year, he managed the challenge of moving the entire department to a new facility. And he has improved transparency and trust with the BusRight Parent App, providing parents with real-time tracking. His professionalism and leadership are the foundation of the department’s success and high morale.“

Chuck Gossett Advocacy Award
The Chuck Gossett Advocacy Award recognizes an OASBO member for professionalism in legislative affairs and advocacy. Chuck was OASBO’s president in 2004-2005, and passed away before he could complete his term. He worked closely with legislators across Ohio, and his vision for OASBO was to be a strong legislative presence, with members actively participating in advocacy efforts on behalf of public schools.

Regional Distinguished Service Awards
The Regional Distinguished Service Awards Program recognizes a member from each of the five OASBO regions who has made a significant contribution to their profession, their schools, and their community.One regional award winner is also selected to receive the Virginia Ramsey Service Award*. Virginia dedicated many hours to improving OASBO’s Annual Conference & Expo. As a result, in 2004, the OASBO Board of Directors created the Virginia Ramsey Service Award to recognize contributions to the OASBO Annual Conference & Expo.

“Nicole has been a staunch advocate for Westerville from the day she arrived. Most recently, she has worked tirelessly on two levies, the first of which was a property tax levy that failed. In response, the most recent levy was an income tax levy that succeeded in large part due to Nicole's work. She advocates at the Statehouse for fair public-school funding and engages with legislators both individually and on public platforms. Nicole is a brave and fearless leader and should be recognized for her fight for the students in her school district and for public education.”

“George has served as chairperson for Southern Hills, a mentor through OASBO, and as a member of the legislative committee. In addition to his 29 years as the treasurer at Wheelersburg Local Schools, George is an ordained minister and has been a pastor and a youth minister. George is a big fan of Wheelersburg football and was an active member of the band boosters during his children’s school years. As a school treasurer, George has been an invaluable asset to those who are lucky enough to know him. He willingly shares his knowledge and has become a trusted resource on complex issues such as state funding, compliance, and cash flow management.“

Londa Schwierking Treasurer Support Staff Award
The Londa Schwierking Award recognizes support staff from each of OASBO’s 5 regions who serve in roles that are vital to the success of the finance office. Recipients are recognized for their attention to detail, effective communication, diligence in accounting, and maintaining documents for financial reports. Throughout her career, Londa was passionate about providing professional development to finance office support staff to help them grow, and to inspire and prepare them for success as school business officials.

As Assistant Treasurer for Warren Local School District, she manages payroll and human resources with exceptional accuracy. She takes time to meet with new employees to offer guidance and support. Brittany is frequently sought out for her expertise and problem-solving skills. She has presented at SupportCon and payroll seminars and helped develop the OASBO Payroll Handbook. Brittany actively helps student workers understand employment basics and organizes the district's successful Health and Wellness Fair."

School Facility Support Staff Award
The School Facility Support Staff Award recognizes staff who provide a safe, clean, welcoming space for staff and students to learn and grow. Collectively, they are responsible for cleaning and maintaining thousands of school buildings throughout Ohio. Staff such as facility, maintenance and custodial supervisors as well as head custodians are vital to successful school district operations.

“Ed Carpenter is a focused and humble professional dedicated to students, staff, and the community. He served in the U.S. Navy before becoming an elementary building custodian, devoted to maintaining high standards, safety, and a healthy environment for students and staff. He advanced to Maintenance Custodian, leading the opening of the district’s new 60,000+ sq ft building. In 2026, he celebrates 30 years of service to the Miamisburg City School District students, staff and community."

Callie Wells Outstanding Communication Award
Callie Wells served as OASBO’s Director of Marketing & Communications from 2017 until her unexpected passing in 2023. She worked tirelessly to move things forward, to be better, and she inspired those around her to become the best versions of themselves. To honor her legacy, the OASBO Foundation created the Callie Wells Award for Outstanding Communication to celebrate those who embody Callie’s exceptional qualities and commitment to communication excellence within our community.
Chris Malanga

“Chris Malanga's impact on Bryan City Schools (BCS) is significant. He began working with the public access channel in 2006, covering select Bryan sports until its discontinuation. In response, he founded Golden Bear Sports Network to continue production. In 2023, BCS hired him as Director of Media Communications to build a student-focused program, with students now handling all production roles and earning pay through ad revenues. Programming has expanded to include 64 sporting events and 32 academic events last year. This program makes BCS available to everyone in the community, especially senior citizens who can’t attend away games. Chris also manages our social media and website, and spearheaded a successful transition from PowerSchool School Messenger to ParentSquare.“
